We live moment by moment with a tension which if we are honest about, and turn our attention towards, we will realize that we are in a constant state of being tight, bound up, contracted, defensive, restricted. It’s obvious to ALL of us and yet like the elephant in the room we continue with our patterns of illusion and suffer greatly. So the question is:
Why do we choose to suffer small or big, why do we engage in such ways of body speech and mind that continue the cycle of suffering?
If we examine the energetics of suffering, we move directly into the view that without all the associations of distorted thinking and emotional entanglement, what we see is the fear of staying present with the tension of experience, period.
Let me say this again, we are uncomfortable with being uncomfortable yet we already have created the conditions for being uncomfortable and then we add more discomfort by running away from discomfort.
So what to do? Slowly build the inner resources to see that suffering is built upon the resistance to pain and all kinds of suffering. All great spiritual paths devote tremendous energy to teaching on how to work with suffering.
So let’s begin with steps you can take immediately. The inner resources needed begin with learning to settle down, calm down, relax while staying alert and present. This allows for a sharp witnessing process that opens the door to viewing how tension is built and maintained. Only then can we start to stay present with what we perceive as discomfort. Once we are somewhat settled, the tension begins to lift and then we become more and more subtle in our perception of the slightest tension and release there is nothing to fear in discomfort and by giving room to discomfort to freely move within a space of attention and stability, the tension will fade and you are left feeling free.
Tension is self-created and self-sustained.
Don’t be afraid of discomfort because in the heart of tension is the illusion that we are not whole. Let the discomfort become your teacher and guide into wholeness, your original state.
